If you're unfamiliar with the area, I'll explain what comprises the Charleston Metropolitan Area, so that when you get here, you'll be a giant step ahead of the game! When speaking with those from other cities and states, we say we live in Charleston, when in fact we might actually live in one of the outlying areas.
You will hear the locals refer to areas such as "Historic Charleston or Peninsula Charleston", "East Cooper", and "West Ashley". Historic Charleston is a peninsula bordered on the East by the Cooper River and on the West by the Ashley River. East Cooper includes those areas East of the Cooper River including Mt. Pleasant, Isle of Palms, and Sullivan's Island. West Ashley includes those areas West of the Ashley River. You also hear about Daniel Island, Summerville and the West Islands.
